In this affluent society we tend to forget about those around us
who are less fortunate. Our large 4 bedroom houses with a couple
of 4 wheel drive vehicles in the drive when so many around the
world live in accommodation that is worse than the shed that we
have in the back yard to house our gardening tools. Think for one
second of full families living in your garden
shed in extremely squalid conditions with no running water or
sanitation. What the heck, there isn't
anything we can do and they are on the other side of the world. We
could always look at a 3 bedroom home and a couple of less
expensive cars as in 4 cylinders. The problem
with
this is that we would not have as good as, or better than,
our neighbours. We would look stupid or even worse still, it would
be a sign of our failure to succeed in some way.
THE 'ZAKAT'
One of
the most important principles of Islam is that all things belong
to God, and that wealth is therefore held by human beings in
trust.
The word Zakat means both 'purification' and
'growth'. Our possessions are purified by setting aside a
proportion for those in need, and, like the pruning of plants,
this cutting back balances and encourages new growth. |
